The last 10 days have been devoted to watching and discussing several rare Caribbean films with Dr Jean Antoine-Dunne, Senior Lecturer in English at the University of the West Indies.
I’ve been tweeting about our activities, so take a look at my twitter feed @Zobelproject

The events included a public film screening of Jamaican reggae classic The Harder They Come at Mockingbird Cinema in Digbeth’s Custard Factory, followed by a fantastic Q&A session with Jean.
We also held several campus screenings, watching films in English, Dutch and Spanish. One particular highlight was Jean’s Guest Lecture on ‘Tracking Signposts to a Caribbean Cinema Aesthetic’ which presented a wide overview of important developments – narrative and aesthetic – in Caribbean cinema, as well as addressing the challenging question of what makes a “Caribbean” film!
The events were generously funded by the Institute of Latin American Studies at the University of London, and the University of Birmingham.
